Thappad

In India, whilst cities are being ameliorated briskly, crimes against women are still a serious problem here. The pitiable condition of women in the country is improving and becoming better; but having said that, the rate of improvement is sluggish and isn’t laudable at all. Amongst all atrocities on women, various crimes are generally ignored and overlooked, because “Yeh to hota rehta hai”.
When I saw the trailer of movie #Thappad, I was quite moved. The trailer has perfectly portrayed the current scenario of Indian society where educated people turn a blind eye to #Taapsee’s distressful situation, and instead of supporting her, they advised her to adjust, because according to them, suffering perpetually on her own is better than being divorced.
Just like #Taapsee, every now and then, a woman has to suffer mentally and physically for the sake of saving her marriage. Physical wounds may heal someday, but mental wounds make her dead inside. A woman has to sacrifice her dignity because to date, women have been doing it. And now, it’s become so common in our society that doing sacrifice is considered as a woman’s responsibility and sole duty. It’s been hard-wired in our brain, and we stooped to the level where we don’t even listen to a woman’s opinion before making a decision. There are only a few women who can question and say “No”. As it’s certainly not easy to change the status quo.
Since her birth, a woman has been hearing “Adjust karlo, yeh to aam baat hai.”
No! This isn’t alright. And, this mustn’t be common anymore.
Walking through a deserted street, a woman is afraid of being raped more than losing her life, for the society has made her think that the value of her life is much lesser than the dignity that has been associated with her vagina. Marital rape and domestic violence are some of the crimes that are overlooked and swept under the rug. Just because a man can do, he does without considering the freedom of others. He doesn’t care for other’s feelings. Somewhere patriarchy has to be blamed for this. It’s influenced our society and people’s thinking. It hasn’t only affected women but men also. The decision-making power in a man’s hand makes them feel entitled to do anything.
I hope, with the release of the trailer of movie #Thappad, women will introspect and men will change. This is for the men and women who have been living as is.
“Just a slap. Par… nahi maar sakta”
